If the nylon was suitable for the oil pan drain plug, why wouldn't it also be suitable for the oil filter? Pretty much the same temperatures and environment.

Even though a bypass filter only filters perhaps 5-7% of the flow, given the tight clearances of the hydraulic lifters I'd still leave it functional.

Just as a reference here is a general temperature guide for some commonly available sealing or flat washers from McMaster or MSC. I'm with O-D. I doubt the nylon washer at the top of a canister which is in an air flow would ever reach max but if you are concerned there are other options. I'd probably go with phenolic or hard fiber over the other soft washers. Packard did use those for sealing on occasion but primarily chose copper. Of course if the sealing surfaces are rough or burred none of the softer washers will last long.
