I am a bit perplexed when it comes to the rebuilding methods that you have outlined. When we rebuild units every parts is cleaned and painted where need be and prepped for assembly. The assembling of a unit is done all at one time. I do not understand why you would partially assemble units and slightly seat the compensator and not finish the assembling until a later point? Why would you feel the need to go back into a unit 2 months later to insure that there is no dirt and do a final cleaning? Wouldn't that have been done during the initial tear-down? These are a closed system besides the vent. I would be more concerned that I would possibly forget to torque down the compensator 2 months later. Do you have photo of the black goo? I do understand that chemicals can react to rubber in different ways but I have never seen rubber shred do to a chemical reaction. I have seen similar shreds and markings to a o ring like your picture above but in those cases it was due to a burr on the compensator or the casting of the T-V. What happens is the o ring stays stationary while the compensator nut is torque and a burr on either the nut or matting surface on the t-v catches the o ring.
