I've enjoyed this thread this morning.

The paint that we used was normal automotive paint. We used paint from Space Age in Mesa, Arizona, only to obtain the correct color and in the spray can. We were like the fellow above who does not even make eye contact with his headliner...Ernie

At one time you could buy fabric dyes (not paint) for cottom and wool headliners in aerosol cans; its probably still around if you go looking for it though I haven't seen it advertised in some years.

you can buy this stuff at Hobby Lobby or online, doesn't leave fabric stiff like regular paint. I'm not sure how well it covers so there may be some color variations depending on stains, guess you'd have to try and see

Just be careful with painting inside the car. Cover everything (seats, doors, dash, carpet, front and rear windows, with those plastic, disposable, drop cloths and tape all the edges. Roll down all the windows, and then cover as much of the outside of the car as you can as well.

Painting in an enclosed space like that produces a cloud of overspray fog that will drift and stick to everything that is not covered.

I painted my steering column in the car and can to take those precautions. Even with a stripped interior.

Also, good quality paint rated respirator is required.

An old used car sales trick. Especially the perforated non woven headliners (GM) could be easily painted.
I believe Duplicolor makes fabric "paint" or dye. I got some last year at the local parts store that sells their products. I used it on my Cad seats to cover blemishes in the white vinyl. It can be used on any fabric. Not sure how it will hold up on a woven headliner, but if it doesn't clean up or cleans uneven then it's an option. Color selection is limited.
But you have to cut your losses at some point with the lipstick on the pig.
