Paraphrasing from page 89 of Terry Martin's fine book "PACKARD - the Warren Years", "...other changes (for 1901) were larger (34" x 4") tires and the decision to make red the standard body color".

This would substantiate that the color on John Hovey's 1901 shown in a photo a few posts ago is correct, RED.

...and not all Ford Model Ts were black. Here is an '09 in red. Class winner at the Santa Fe Concorso.

Speaking of colors which white is not a color, or some would say.
Now this is what I would call a white Packard. Saw this one in the private collection of Arthur O. Stone, former CEO of Buning the Florist, Inc. at Antique Car Museum Inc. in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Pure white I don't know, but it looks pretty white to, even the tires are all white.

Automotive finishes progressed from the varnishes used by carriage & buggy manufacturers, to nitrocellulose lacquers and enamels, to acrylic lacquers. Types of colors offered and their respective durabilities varied with each technology. Here's a short version of the history of automotive finishes provided by The Eastwood Co.
