As I come down the home stretch on my research on Packard's "thief-proof" numbers, let me make one more plea for data. Data on any year is useful but I especially need data on 1938 thru 1940, 1942, and 1951 thru 1954. To be useful the data I need are the thief-proof number and the corresponding vehicle number. If a 1941-54 the Briggs number (tag by heater) is also useful.

While the finished publication may show your thief-proof number in a chart or table, there will be no link to your personal identity or that of your particular vehicle.

And thanks again to all those who have already responded.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. As it turns out I already had your thief-proof number on record via from some data I had received from noted prewar Packard historian James Pearsall. Knowing Jim as I do, since your car was already known to him he may well have some prior ownership information recorded. Jim occasionally browses this site but I suggest you contact him by mail, and provide your email address for his response.

Note to other readers: I still need thief-proof data, especially 38-40, 42, and 51-54 data. I was actually hoping to get more than I have from readers on this site. If you're uncomfortable making it public, send it (with the vehicle number) via a PM.

Many thanks for that number, it turned out to be significant as it didn't fall within the range of numbers I already had but represented new "lowest known" for that year.

To any newbies who might not have seen this thread, I'm collecting vehicle numbers (from the VN plate) and corresponding thief-proof numbers (the large embossed number on the engine-side of the cowl) to include in a study I've been doing for some years and which PAC has agreed to publish within a year or so. So if you are willing, I'm anxious to gather as many sets of numbers as possible. The publication will not include your name or any information about your car, though the thief-proof # may be listed in a table or chart. Send by PM or email if you prefer.
