With the car back on the ground, and the shocks returned to normal position, torque the castellated nut for the upper-outer support in place and put in a new cotter pin.

BUT FIRST:
IF you plan on replacing your rubber rebound bumper, do this AFTER you've replaced the shock, otherwise it kind of gets in the way.

If you have any more questions, or if you need photos of certain steps along the way, let me know. I bought a replacement pin and bushing kit for the upper-outer arm (remember, I had to cut it off), and the pin was too long, so if you experience that problem, I can walk you through that as well.

Thanks for the photos. I added oil to both shocks (they were dry), and the ride improved dramatically. The front end sits up about an inch higher, too.

Wes, You live a charmed life is all I can say. Watched friend Bob doing front end rebuild of a 48 with things disconnected & lower arm supported by a floor jack. He pulled on something and that corner of car went up. Spring bowed out, barely missed him & shot across his shop. Don't think I'd ever work on front end without at least chaining things down after seeing that.

Glad to hear the fluid solved your problem. Keep an eye on them as they might still leak. But, I'd say your chances are good.

It's very possible something was amiss with your friend's situation. Perhaps that spring wasn't set properly... or, maybe as you say, I was lucky. There did not appear to be any danger in the way it was done. Good advice to chain it together.

Hi postwar Packard Group.
I'm new to the group. Check in once in a while, but this is my first post.
I may need to do something to the shocks on my 47, so this thread was of interest to me.

I checked the fluid level on the shocks, and they were as dry as a bone.

I inquired at my local cycle shop about shock fluid.
They had front fork fluid in 3 weights... 10, 20, and 30
weight in quart cans. Non-foaming formula.

I filled my shocks ( 20 Weight ).......waiting and watching to see if the fluid leaks out.

I live in Northern Minnesota. Zero here today and a blizzard last night. Need to go out soon and plow the drive way.

I will be starting to work on the 47 as the weather warms up. Will be needing information as I proceed. Will make other
posts as I get into the project.
