the best thing to do would be to remove the two screws that hold the filler between the colum, and the heater control/shift quadrant, and check. once you remove those screws(they are on the bottom) you can pull the filler back and look up at the bottom of the colum. you'll be looking right at the mount for the indicator needle. then you'll know if it's there and broke, or completely missing

GreenDragon: I have been having an issue with my speedometer and have spent way too much time A. Sober and B. With my hands under the dashboard. Back to the gear selector, looking at the bottom of the steering column I see a threaded hole and guess that this is were the indicator fits up into. Don't know what else is missing, perhaps a set screw.

Morgan, if you would take a picture of the bottom of your steering column & post. Been awhile since I had one apart to look at, but IIRC there are several pieces for the pointer clamp mechanism under the chrome plate covering the gap between air vent & heater knobs. Should be a piece that goes to shift tube, a flat anti rattle spring, retainer, and the pointer clamp. Believe they fit into a rectangular hole in the column with the pointer wrapped around in a U shape to the indicator area.
