PackardV8, check that again, that photo shows the removal of the inner seal. Outboard of the bearing is just a gasket between the retaining plate and the backing plate.

Yes. THanks for the photo and specific seal location. Probably a good idea to replace the seal while axle is removed.

No fitting to lube, they have to be disassembled and packed by hand. I would have it done if don't know the last time it was. Also fully inspect all the bearings to make sure all the rollers and races are in good shape. Also while you have it apart replace the inner and outer grease seals. Then you should be good for at least another 30k miles.

When I took my '51 into my mechanic and when I had my '55 towed in, I gave my mechanic a spare FSM for both and how to access this website. I told them I wanted everything stated in the book done to both as far a major periodic service.

Now not only do I have no worries about those parts; taking them apart allowed for inspection as well.

I was pleased to find out that all the bearings on both of my Packards were fine, though the pinion seal on the '55 needed to be replaced.

WHILE drivers side axle shaft is REMOVED then clear the axle vent BEFORE axle shaft is replaced:

https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4431&forum=3&post_id=48048#forumpost48048

Edit: the above applies to 56's ONLY. Does NOT apply to 55's.

Jim L. That vent description applies to 56 ONLY! NOT 55's.
