The only nuts you need to loosen are the ones under the main trim piece that runs along the top of the hood. Once you've loosened them, you can slide the trim backwards about an inch or two. Then, you just slide your hood ornament base backwards. Sorry. I have no photos to show the underside of the ornament.

You haven't yet told us which model you have, and which ornament? The standard ornament for a 180 was the pelican (cormorant). The standard ornament for the 160 was the "doughnut pusher," (godess), which is the one that you see on Mal's car.
Both ornaments are optional on any series car, and both are reproduced by American Arrow in Michigan. They are made of stainless steel, and are beautiful. Cost is roughly $720, which includes a new base. You need to let them know which series car you have, because the base is shorter on the junior cars, and I don't know if they make both bases or not. Thank you West. I have an 1805, 1940 Club Coupe 120.
I want to make sure the hood ornament I acquire is the original spec. I have the standard hood ornament on now. It is pitted. Sure is nice to find this information from you. Thankfully, Al

If by "standard," you mean the bail, I'll tell you I'm a BIG fan of the bail, taking after "Dutch" Darrin who abhorred anyone putting the cormorant or the goddess on his creations. In fact, I took the cormorant off of my car and replaced it with the bail. I eventually will replace it, but for now, it's off.
We're looking forward to seeing photos of your car.

I am new at Packards. However, you make a very good point. I think mine has "the bail".
Spent the last 2 days buffing and glazing. Looking good! I hope the attachments work. Thanks, Al packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/registry/index.php?Action=view&ID=1097C:\Users\Al\Desktop\Silver auction\IMG_2270_edited-1.jpg packardinfo.com/xoops/html/cache/4228_4ee012330b4fc.jpg

Your touring sedan looks wonderful. The pictures of you as a youth sitting on dads Packard are priceless.
I wanted a Packard for a long time. Feels great to have one. I think I was lucky to get a good one, at a fair price. Al
