wanted to update my blog with the findings i got for the waterpump seal, even though i haven't tested it.
it is 1 7/16 wide for the housing and 5/8 for the shaft and 3/4 tall just like the original type seal. here is the seal. grainger.com/Grainger/FLOWSERVE-Mechanical-Pump-Shaft-Seal-1R324?Pid=search this is the high end version with VITON material, carbon washer and all stainless including the seat. the seat is press fit on the shaft as well, so you would push the seal in the housing...then press the seat on the shaft till the seal is loaded enough, then put on your impeller. then you don't have to worry about a not perfect impeller to seat surface. the stainless steel seat is smooth. it is a bit pricey, but like i said they have lower versions made of other materials, like Buna rubber etc. buna goes up to 225 F and VITON goes to 400 F they have molded rubber washer, but i think the original is carbon. anyways, i may buy one later on to test and if good then we will have a replacement and the job is done. here it is for 19.98 zorotools.com/g/00060088/k-G2433557?utm_ ... c&utm_campaign=Google_Shopping_Feed here is the cheaper buna version. not sure it will last though not having a carbon washer and only going to 225 F grainger.com/Grainger/FLOWSERVE-Mechanical-Pump-Shaft-Seal-1R306?Pid=search Hank . great minds indeed!
my son sure does know how to cheer me up. He said daddy, where is Packard part, i wanna see what happened. so i went and showed him and he said he could fix it. i was like this should be fun. He said he could fix it with glue. so i entertained that notion and helped him glue it back and he was pretty proud that he fixed it for daddy. fyi, we fix all his toys with glue when they break, so he thinks that is how to fix all things. It really warmed my heart and reminded me what its all about. Hank Attach file: (35.87 KB) (31.37 KB)

Give your son his due. He's just thinking ahead of his time and on to something we've missed out on. By the time he's driving your Packard, there probably will be a glue just for the purpose. They already hold half the new cars together with adhesive.
In the meantime, I'm not going to be the one to try that particular repair out today but I can think of some I've met seeing the photo & reaching for the JB Weld.

Henry, another engine appearance feature I like is visible gasket edges. Paint all the engine parts separately, then assemble. Factories don't do this because of greatly increased costs, but individuals can do it easily on their rebuild projects. Just a suggestion...

Bingo! If you notice, I've already started that process I like the way it looks too.

just wanted to brag a bit on myself. i think this water pump seal is going to work great and probably will be far superior to the original. and at 19 bucks its not much more then the original costs.
the seat is a bit big, but you can see it has a rubber gasket that allows you to mount it on the shaft, but i don't think it will work. i think it will not allow the impeller to sit flat. oh well, the impeller has a surface on it. here are some mock up pics. 3rd time is the charm. i got the water pump together, just need to paint it. whew!
i got the valve covers buttoned down and realized i forgot the sparkplug wire holders. i found one of them in the sand blaster cabinet, but i can't find the other. may need to see if one of you guys have a spare laying around. i'll have to look in my shed too it may be in there. i got the carb studs put on and mounted the carb and breather just for fun. i got the engine mounts put on as well with some grade 8 bolts. going to be sending off the harmonic balance for rebuilding soon as well. just have a few parts to clean and then i can paint them and mount them to the motor. i have to uncover the trans as well and clean it up and paint it. enjoy Hank Attach file: (33.78 KB) (27.85 KB) (30.31 KB) (37.60 KB) (24.32 KB) (29.71 KB) (39.03 KB) (39.62 KB) (31.19 KB) (32.18 KB) (25.49 KB) (27.86 KB) (37.54 KB) (39.90 KB) (26.53 KB) (33.94 KB) (21.30 KB) (31.43 KB) (27.12 KB) (20.96 KB) (26.86 KB) (34.76 KB) (33.53 KB) (36.23 KB) (26.08 KB) (26.86 KB) (30.34 KB)
