I made it back to Germany with a suitcase full of parts....water pump, hydraulic rams for the convertible top, fuel filter, fuel gauge float/sender, robe rail for the seat back and a few other odds and ends.
I recently got the PS pump back together. I wound up using a 68x2mm O ring which I hope holds. I pulled the generator out and will clean that up. The brushes look like they still have some life on them, but can anybody comment from the pictures on how much life they still have? It looks like one of the brushes was hanging over the edge of the rotating armature? and worn down 1/4 inch or so. You are correct, the one brush is misbehaving. I would replace the brushes as long as you are going to take the generator apart for cleaning. Looks like your generator has one of the ball bearing end housings. This is for the heavy duty units and is preferred over the bushing type housings. It should take the same bearing as the front housing.

It’s hard to tell from the photos, but ‘in-board side’ brush holder looks like it over hangs the end of the commutator. I would investigate that once you’ve disassembled the generator.

Generator will get a looking into someday. I spent an hour last night removing the Convertible top valve. Tight quarters under the dash, but I removed the valve and sent it to Hydr-e-lectric in Florida for a rebuild. It was pretty crusty, and the crimp from the Red wire Was broken, so I think come spring I will have a working top. All Hydraulic parts will be new or rebuilt, and I will check the wires for continuity.

This winter I took everything off the front of the engine for freshening up paint, gaskets, rebuilt water pump etc.
Some questions about what should be grey and what should be black: Vibration damper pulley: grey PS pulley at crankshaft: Black PS pump bracket: grey Generator bracket: Black Timing pointer? Slowly cleaning and painting parts, and trying to do things as correct as possible.

Except for the Alternator, everything in this photo should be correct per the PI Engine Judging Guide.

Beautiful job. Maybe paint the alternator black? Thanks for sharing.
