Here is a quick and dirty explanation of the difference between the AC alternator and how the commutator makes essentially the same coil of wire passing thru a magnetic field into a DC generator.rfwireless-world.com/Terminology/AC-generator-vs-DC-generator.html
The typical generator has multiple coils of wire with one or two coil ends connected to each commutator segment. Because of the way the coils are spaced around the armature there is always one approaching the field from the same direction so the output is relatively ripple free.
