Not so elusive when you know where to look. - Select the Packard Literature and Manuals heading in the Main Menu, at left. - Then scroll down to and select Miscellaneous Packard Information. - Scroll down again and select Packard Engine Serial Number Reference. It's currently #65 of #98. It's also in alphabetical order. - Click on the heading to open it. - Click on Packard Engine Serial Number Reference and voila! it'll download the table for you.

1948 2293 = Std 8 Pass sedan.
I guess the question is was the "wood" normally added over the steel door skin? If so, no rare bird biggie here. Most likely for me. I'd suggest, research if "door wood delete" was an option/other photos*. If the wood failed for some reason even 20 years after and was removed and resprayed, by now the paint would be indistinguishable from factory. Easy to see the condition of the remaining wood. The "faux" woodie became more common than "all wood" as they got away from the early '30s up woodies as woodworking was no longer used in body construction. Eventually, they even went to faux vinyl covering between the slats well after Packard died - Pinto's, Chrysler vans, etc. '48 is a little early for that technology. Even the slats weren't wood by then. I've only seen 1-2 of these on TV going to auction, just not a long wheelbase kinda guy but a soft spot for a '30s woodie. * - need period photos unfortunately b/w because sales lit was still artist rendered in this era.

Hi Fish'n Jim
"I guess the question is was the "wood" normally added over the steel door skin?" Packard couldn't do it the easy way then, they had to cut out the door skins to fit the wood panels into, as well as upper door skins and upper panel sections to fit the wood. Mal posted this photo of a Station Sedan in the restoration process a while ago. The car in question has the upper door skins removed to accommodate the wood. Steve

Hi Mal; Hard to believe your trip was eight years ago. I put the first piece of completed wood on the station sedan today. The picture in the registry shows all the wood with the exception of the rear window which I am working on at the time. I have five pieces left in the final blocking and polishing stage. It has been a long woad with many redo's and hours of varnishing. Hopefully it will be in the upholstery shop by the first of the year.
As for the solid door station sedan, I first saw it on ebay which had some larger pictures. I would bet money the doors have been skinned by a skilled body man, the primer is different on the doors and if one looks at the rear door about the level of the front door lock two short lines of a lighter color are visible about one inch apart. That is where the weld would be located. They say never judge a man till you walk a mile in his moccasins, but sure would like to put my hand inside that door. Please take care and hope all of yours are well. Dell

G'day Dell,
Time flies when you're having fun, especially with Packards! It was about this time of year back in 2012 because I was going to Hershey for the first time. Thanks for the update on the continued progress on the S/Wagon. Stay safe and well.

The wood on all 4 doors is not bolted to the door skin, it is a unit that is inserted into a large hole cut into the door. What the car in question is , it's probably a well used car whose wood failed and it was easier to bolt on a set of sedan doors. No such thing as a "wood delete"
