If forward works OK and it just won't move in reverse and no big mechanical damage has happened, here are the easy places Packard would have you start looking. Page 37 in the Ultramatic section of 51-54 service manual if you have one or if not, you can download a copy from the literature and manuals section.

Ross will probably be along later with some of the interesting and not so obvious places to look which could be causing the issue that he's run across.

Howard offers some great advice.

Since your problems is so much different than the one being discussed here, it is better to start a new topic. We have a habit of wandering all over the place on these discussion threads, which can make for some rich information sharing. However, this practice makes it difficult to track down a specific item or discussion in the future as the topic title does not reflect the new area that has been introduced.

It is easy to start your own topic, just click on the New Topic button at the top of the screen on the Packard Forums section in which you wish to post and go from there. In your case - Post-War (1946-1954).

Oh yes, welcome to the site. I'm sure you will find many here willing to share their vast and deep knowledge of Packards.
