Good Morning all...I suppose each to his/her own...As for me I really like the old machines and I drive them all the time. They both get a thumb's up each time they go out...sometimes many thumbs up! I enjoy the sounds, the smells, the world at a slower pace...Granted there are those who think that I am eccentric...and that's ok with me...the world is what you make it, not what someone else wants your world to be...Have a great Packard Day...Ernie in Arizona!

To paraphrase Tim Cole's comment a while back:
"70 and 80 year old cars have low performance engines without any safety features." Unsafe at most speeds!

Yes, true so we have to drive accordingly to stay out of trouble. And regular maintenance is important.
But Ernie is right. My 1956 Clipper attracts far more attention (of the right sort) out on the road than my Ferrari 575 or Maserati Quattroporte, which are both quite attractive and unusual cars by modern standards. Have to make allowances for the Clipper in modern traffic, but it's hard to beat in a deluge. Behaves like a boat and nothing can stop it! Brian

The post about accidents triggered my interest. I've had arguments about relative safety of vintage cars. You know like drum brakes are as good as disks, etc. I looked up some stats relative to my 1949 Packard. The Vehicle Deaths per 100 million miles traveled in 1949 was 7.13. In 2018 it was 1.09. Ernie is right probably safer on a horse unless you drive within the cars safety limitations or use a trailer.
Here's an interesting graph I found by Dennis Bratland. Attach file: (32.88 KB)
