The condenser steps up the voltage going to the ignition coil as soon as the points open. It's basically a capacitor that stores voltage for when it's needed.

Hate to disagree with Eric on the condenser but the primary use is to provide an alternate path to prevent points from arcing & pitting due to back EMF from coil. Doesn't really raise the voltage itself but case can be made for storing a higher voltage developed elsewhere very briefly. There are several sites with descriptions but here's a couple of concise ones for anyone curious.

Two descriptions of the same thing, the condenser's there to prevent the points from burning by taking up the excess current from the points and putting it into the coil.

ive had the car for 12 years and never tampered with distr since i got it let alone checking points..this could account for the condition of "hard starting" We'll see by tommarrow..and naturally the small screw holding all these things together fell somewhere..in the eng compartment or on the garage floor...time for more colorful language.

Yeah, those points are fried.Put new ones in if ya got them.Still wont prove spark however.Do that and you have no spark issue.(Spark check that is.)And yes that will account for the hard starting.(pitted points that is.) Brian
