just wondering if anyone knows of a local equivalent for part number 202719, group 1.502.
just wondered if there was a modern part number i could x-reference. also, any reason why i shouldn't reuse the brake pads that were on there. the look fine, just some very lite surface rust. they seem to be pretty solid otherwise. i have no idea how long they have been on there or how old. thanks, Hank

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend, but I was suprised and began to think it might have been a jest. Nearly anyone who ever did a brake adjustment would have encountered these, I just didn't think anyone as active in the hobby as the folks on the site wouldn't have had that experience.

i have only messed with drum brakes one other time in my life and i that was nearly 10 plus years ago. i hardly remember doing them. it was an 83 Chrysler Cordoba, my first car.
since then it has been disk only....disk i know about well. on a BMW the E-brake uses a drum inside the rotor setup. you adjust it by taking out one of the lug bolts, inserting the tool and ratcheting the mechanism, which looks just like the one on the Packard. there is no plug other than the lug bolt. so, on a car that is 50 plus years old, and my first restore, i think i am entitled to not know about little things like that, especially since i have only really ever worked on BMWs from within the last 10 years or so. i was only just born in 1981....;0) all is forgiven.

Hank,
Try not to read too much in between the lines. I believe that the "factory" adjusting hole plugs were steel on these cars, but most people wouldn't recognize one of those unless they found them as originally installed on their car. The first time I did brake work on one of these cars, I almost threw 'em away and put rubber ones on in their place. Parts like that often got lost during service, too. Yet, because the plug holes were identical on so many vehicles and that style of drum brake remained in use for so many years, the aftermarket stocked and sold rubber ones by the "card" to dealers. If you have a good old-fashioned parts store in your area, I bet they still have 'em available, individually, in rubber.

got the u bolt from HH56 today. put it all together, but HH and I are working through a potential problem with the U-bolt.
HH. i think that the spacers, etc... are fine, i really think the bolt is shorter than my other one. when i look at them the bushings seem to look like they are compressed the same, so i am willing to bet the bolt is shorter. i am going out to take it back apart after i post this and i will post a pic of the old and new u bolt side by side to see if there is a difference. maybe this has something to do with my car being a very early 55 model and having more of a 54 style rear end, etc...don't know. you can see in the pick that the passenger's side old bolt has about 1/2" of thread coming out, but the new bolt barely fits. update coming soon.
