Another cost factor with a 9-main bearing crankshaft is that there are a total of 17 journals to be finished (8 rod and 9 main) if the rod and main bearings are all done, plus removing and replacing the counter weights on the 356 version.

I get your point, but to me a Chevy engine in a Packard means it's no longer a Packard, just a another mongrel.

Yup, absolutely. I don't have a problem putting different years of Packard engines in different years of cars, but at least use a Packard engine in it. Even if it's a 320/352/374 in a '37 115 it's still ok in my book. The only time a non-Packard engine should be used is if you're using a BTV and need something attached to a chain to throw out the door to stop.

I wonder if anyone has put a Packard 12 in a Clipper or even if it would be possible? Now that would get some attention!

I don't see why not, it's shorter than the straight eight and should fit in there with a little work. Especially on a Senior chassis which is longer.

The bad thing is a Packard V12 engine and trans is usually worth more than a postwar car that you'd be putting it in. I always thought it would be neat to put a Packard V12 in a '56 Patrician, and have the fabled postwar V12 Packard...

Many "surplus" Twelve motors have been used to create bogus upgrades of prewar Eights and Super Eights into Twelves. Beware of Twelves w/o original vehicle number plates.

Then there is the rumored 1954 Patrician with an alleged factory Twelve installation in the Chicago area, supposedly ordered by a livery service. Many leads to it over the years have proven illusive and as far as I know it's just a rumor. And if you look at the height of a Twelve motor, it's far too high to fit, the carb would be well above the hood even with the oil pan nearly scraping the pavement.

Eric, how familiar are you with the Twelve? I'll send you a scan of factory blue prints tomorrow of the upper and lower ends, look at that before you say "no biggie".

We've already taken this thread for a ride far afield, why don't you start a new one about fitting a Twelve in a post-1950 chassis?

I say no biggie because I've learned that some people can't think outside the box and I realize that there is no box.

I've never seen a Packard V12 in person, but I know enough about mechanics to know that if someone says I can't do it, I always find a way to prove them wrong.

I look forward to seeing the scans, as it will enable me to prove my point.
