removal of 56 taillight without removing bumper

As my 56 400 is going in for a major touch-up this winter I decided to try to remove the taillights without removing the rear bumper. I removed all four mounting studs (458972) by double-nutting, and both screws (G162479). Unplug the tail/brake light (G454645) and remove the backup lens (458978) and the 1073 bulb (G454646). The body can then be tilted down and carefully lifted out. I made a separate piece of metal to remount one of the screws because the SQUARE hole would not hold the screw tightly.
In short, it can be done, BUT all things considered, it is easier to drop the rear bumper.
I had forgotten about the square screw hole since 1991, but the memory quickly came back.
The last picture is the housing going back in with mounting studs attached.

The 55-56 front and as I recall rear bumpers have one eccentric mounting bolt on each side. this allows the bumpers to be tilted up or down on either side for alignment. To remove the rear taillight on senior cars, if there is in sufficient clearance due to the bumper irons having been bent in previous parking encounters you could try the eccentric bolt first. Note, the regular bolt must be loosened first.

Thanks

Been some time since I had one of those units out.

Square holes suggest use of a speed nut - similar to those used in conjunction with the screws for the headlamp doors. Originally of steel, most are made of nylon(?) these days.
