I remember my buddy made a custom wall rack for his windshield.

Glass shops always store and transport glass vertically. I would make a wooden rack and possibly a plywood box for extra safety.

I purchased a new windshield for my 1957 Packard some years back.
The new windshield is stored in its shipping box which is constructed of a heavy gauge cardboard. Inside the box the windshield is supported in two cardboard cross pieces, notched to accept the glass in a vertical position.
Hopefully the new windshield will be installed this spring or summer.
