Once the rear shocks are loose, the rear leafs should have their tension removed right? The bushings can be changed right? Once the bushings are replaced, are any special tools needed to get the leafs back installed? No bending is needed right? just wondering if I want to attempt replacing the bushings.

Also how does one know when the maertial between the leafs should be replaced?

Thanks,

If the car is off the ground (frame supported) and rear axle is hanging down, yes. Otherwise, there's load on the springs.
Usually, they'll make noise/squeak if the leafs are rusty. You can take to a spring shop and let them evaluate them to see if they still met spec. Otherwise, mileage or visible sagging, leaning, etc are about all you can inspect. Spring shop will re-arch, releaf, etc., if needed.

Thanks, yes the car is off the ground and the axle is hanging down and the shocks are unbolted. So the liners (not sure if thats the right name) between the leafs isn't something I can replace? Just a spring shop?

Hello John.
A few years ago I changed the spring bushings on my 49. I found bushings for a Mazda utility are perfect, the part number was SPF0543K, can't remember the brand but I can find out if you want.

Good Morning...New springs are available from Eaton Detroit Spring...I purchased a set for our 49 deluxe...they made the springs for Packard originally. They were something like $650 plus $150 shipping from Detroit to the wilds of Arizona...came with just a toe tag and a little box containing the bushings...I'll bet you could just purchase bushings if you wanted to...Ernie in Arizona

Do the leaf spring bushings need to be pressed in? John

Thanks. I will try repainting relineing and rebushing the springs. I will post about it.
