Does anyone know how Packard pressed the upholstery fabric on the door panels rather than sewing them. This is common in the 50 `s and maybe all along .
The original door panels looked like the fabric was pressed in with a heated apparatus that was a mold that made the impressions .
I had an upholsterer sub this technique out but lost touch with the upholsterer that knew the technique.

Packard's vendors that did door panels used die presses combined with steam and sometimes adhesive too..

One of these vendors was Mitchell-Bentley Company in Owosso, Michigan. If you stood outside of the building, you could see several chimneys rising out of the roof. Each of those chimneys would let out a puff and column of white "smoke" which was actually hot steam. A very magical look to the process.

This process is still available from SMS Fabrics of Canby, Oregon. The have the original showroom selection books, the fabrics, vinyl and other materials, and the manufacturing equipment.

Might be magical, but are you sure they weren't signalling election of a new Pope?
