Locking gas cap will not unlock

My Stant locking gas cap will no longer unlock. Of course, I need to fuel the car! My car is a 47 clipper. From what I read on the internet is that I should stick a screwdriver into the keyhole hammer it in and then rotate the screwdriver to get the cap off. Has anyone else had any experience with this problem. Any advice would be helpful.
I have ordered a replacement standard cap from Max Merrit. Once it arrives I will attempt to remove the old gas cap.

I have never tried the brute force method but before you do have you tried lubing the mechanism. Could be worth a stop at the hardware store and picking up a small spray can of 3 in 1 dry lock lube or the equivalent. Use the plastic tube in the keyhole and dose the innards. Doesn't cost much and maybe will save the cap. If it does not help then you are out a bit of time and a few bucks but no worse overall.

I did try some lube but will get the lube you mention today and give it a try. Howard is usually right!

Lube it. Put the key in and tap it ( not hard). Also try turning the whole cap counter clockwise as far as it will go when in place. Insert key and turn key counter clockwise. If I haven’t put the cap all the way to the right or left, the lock can lock up and the key won’t turn.

That's true. Make sure the cap is turned fully closed so the mechanism is not binding.

I would spray in PB Blaster as my lube of choice but it won't matter much.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

The hammer and screwdriver method is a car thief thing. If the lock is not serviceable use cobalt coated drill bits to remove the tumblers. Hammers will serve only to damage the tank.

Love this answer. I was very concerned about damaging the tank. Will try other methods first!!

Drilling (or hammering for that matter) might cause a spark and that’s the last thing you want in a gas tank filled with fumes!

Most caps are held on by two tabs on the outside edge that engage the filler neck rim. The metal on caps is generally fairly thin. So you should be able to take a screwdriver or a pair of pliers and bend those tabs away from the filler neck rim, thereby releasing the cap.
