51/54 parts compatibility?

So my uncle saw this 51 for sale, no motor but it looks in nice shape otherwise, could drop a 454 into it and make it a sleeper car or something... anyway there is a 54 parts car upstate we could pick up for free, I'm wondering how much is in common a 51 200 and a 54 4dr, if it's worth picking up the 54 as parts for the 51 if needed. Mostly along the lines of drivetrain parts and such things. Interior on the 51 looks good and for sure he wouldn't use a Packard motor when he has a 454 lying around.
He's done projects like this before, making rat rods etc. so that general sphere of things we already are familiar. Wondering more about the little details.

Obviously we're still at the idea stage right now, thoughts on this?

P.S. Also this 49 here if that would happen to have more in common...

P.P.S. Also these here would be a possibility for parts and title, 52/53? IDK what they are really.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

Much of the mechanical parts cross over. Fenders are all the same. Side glass is same. Windshields are different. Door handles are same.

54 Special and Deluxe Clippes use 55 Clipper brakes. 54 Super Clippers use 53 and prior brakes.

Although the rear fenders may bolt or weld on, you need to keep in mind that the 51 and the 54 may have used different taillights. Also, the rear doors on the 51 and the 54 four door sedans have somewhat different styling on their outer skins.

You have a lot of possibilities here. I think the green 1951 Packard 200 in PA is a good builder. The body looks really straight, and the original interior appears to be useable as is, just give it a good cleaning.

The 1954 Packard will provide an engine. 1951-1954 200's and Clippers all used the same engines. It would be either the 288 CI base engine or the optional 327 CI. But in 1954, only the lowest price Clipper Special used the 288, the fancier Clipper Deluxe and Clipper Super models used the more powerful 327CI. It is hard to tell from the photos, but I think that the '54 parts car is either a Deluxe or a Super. Either way, you can't argue with free.

The two Packards being sold along with the 1950 Plymouth are a 1953 Clipper Deluxe and a 1953 Patrician. In 1953 and 1954, the fancier Clipper models had full length side trim. I once had a close friend who had the same model 1953 Packard and I recognized it right away.

The Patrician used a larger 9 main bearing Straight 8, so this one won't help you very much with the 200. Also, the Patrician was a longer, heavier car than the Clipper line and most of the trim is different. The '53 Clipper engine will work in the 200. It also has a nice set of taillights which are the same as on a 1951-1952 200.

I suppose you could take the engine from the 1949, but you wouldn't be able to use much of anything else as the 1951 Packard was a completely new car from the ground up.

Good luck with your project. Please post pictures of your progress.

Not sure about using the 48-50 engine in a later model. You can use a 51 and later engine in the 49 because the front motor mount is on a plate that will bolt to the front of the block. I don't think the reverse is true with the 49 engine because of the change in mounts. I do not believe that block has the extra casting thickness and threaded holes on the sides of the block used for the 51 and later engine mounts.

Howard you are correct. That later motors (51-54) could accept either mounting as then they could be used as service replacement motors. The earlier motor (pre 51) will not work in the 51-54 cars.

The 1954 appears to be a Patrician which was on the 127” wheelbase while the 200 was on the 122” wheelbase. That being the case, only the front door glass is the same. Rear doors are longer on the longer wheelbase. Also the 1954 had the 359 engine which was the only year it was used. Even the wheels and brakes are different between them. The front doors, hood and trunk lid are about the only body parts that interchange and even then it would take filling of holes and redrilling for the proper trim. The dash is different too. As I discovered in trying to get even nuts and bolts from my 1954 Patrician parts car for the 1951 I’m working on, most are different.

Bottom line is that the 1954 would not make a good parts car from the 1951.

All the front fenders were the same 51-54.

They only had I set of part numbers for replacement fenders, and they came undrilled for the trim. Dealers were expected to drill the holes for the appropriate trim.
