Hello. In the UK, Rolls-Royce cars were supplied with a 'town cap', a plain screw-on cap in place of the silver lady mascot, the idea being to have the town cap in place when the vehicle was parked, to avoid the mascot being stolen. My 1404 has an elaborate chromed pelican mascot that is attached to the top of the radiator grille by a very simple slot locking device, which takes two seconds to remove. Is there an after market device that I can purchase to put in place of the mascot when the car is left unattended on the public highway please?

Standard equipment on your Packard was a plain unadorned radiator cap generally known as the bail or bale cap and I believe this is what you want. You'll find it pictured in the showroom catalogs among other places. If I can quickly find an image I'll attach it.

This is the standard cap that was on all
37s and probably '35-36 as delivered.
The pelican and Goddess of Speed were optional.
This cap is original to our 1500 RHD.
(The ORIGINAL cracked paint is a whole other story!)

Mine that was on my 37 was quite a bit different than Mr. Supina's. Mine is a 120 so that will probably be the reason. I used some paint on mine to cover the worst of the pitting as my trim colour is red.

thanks for this enlightenment. Is the metal on these caps Mazak (now called Zamak or Zamac) or other zinc alloy or is it plain steel?

I have only heard it called pot metal or white metal, but is an amalgam that includes zinc I believe.
