Laurie's 1938 Club Coupe

Dear All,

Laurie will be posting the information on her new car in the owner's directory, but I thought I would introduce the car to the pre-war crowd. The car is a 1938 Eight club coupe, model 1601, body style 1195. The original data plate is missing (this is the one year they used a plastic sticker), so I don't know the serial number. The other numbers are in the folder that Laurie has, so those will come in an update.

The car was previously owned by a Boeing engineer up in Seattle. It has been very well taken care of, and there are only a few things that are not original, including sealed beam headlights, the air-filter, and very slow electric wiper motor. The originals for all items are present in the spare parts box. It also came with an original factory service manual, the original owner's manual, and a host of paper work on repairs.

The interior was re-done, and was done correctly. The paint has also been redone, but not very well. The running board rubber is missing, but all trim is in place or is available.

When we got it back to TX, we had the tank and fuel system cleaned out, the brakes redone, shocks filled with oil, oil changed, differential and transmission fluids changed, radiator flushed, battery cut-off switch installed, and new tires put on. The tires are tube radials.

The work was completed by Dec. 9 so Laurie could drive the car on her birthday!

You may find that the windshield wipers will work like new merely by cleaning the linkage joints and applying new lubrication. I'm not familiar with the electric motors, but there may be some lubrication needed there as well.

When I worked on my non-moving wipers (vacuum), the linkage joints were stiff with old, old greese. It was difficult to move them even by hand. Now they move back and forth like a banshee.

Tom, West makes a good suggestion. I have also found that lubricating the windshield wiper shafts where they protrude through the cowl is a good idea. They are exposed to weather and elements and can get bad enough to freeze-up completely.

Can you sneak us a few photos of the interior?

Purolator A30052 is the number for the air filter element.

We should get the 115C and the Eight together this weekend.

That is definitely something I will look at. We are also thinking about returning the system to original, as we have the original Trico motor.

Dear All,

I am looking for photographs of the rear stabilizer rod, as installed, on a 38 1600 or 1601. According to the parts book, the design of the stabilizer was changed for the 17th series, so I think this is a one year only part. I am thinking, right now, that I will have to make it. Any information/photos will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure I'd go through the trouble of changing back to vacuum unless the electric motor no longer works.
