Can anyone tell me if the water distribution tube is removable through the grill on a 51 through 54 model?

I don't know about a 50 but just remember that the tube is over 30 inches long and it has to come straight out from the engine, so unless you have a hole in your radiator "it ain't gonna do it"

howdy bob! for once i can be helpful. ok so you can remove it without removing the grill. however, you still have to pull the radiator and water pump(duh).

i did this recently on my 52 200 deluxe.http://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3618&forum=10

though i didn't remove it to take out the tube, i did to put it back in. it's almost impossible to not bend the fool thing with the grill there.

1952 200 deluxe touring- its a goer...but not a stopper. Just ask my neighbour about her flower bed.

The brass tube is so easy to bend or mangle not sure I would want to try to wrestle it out through the grille opening. Remember no one is making those anymore, so if you broke one, a replacement would have to come from another engine!

Think of it an opportunity to clean up and paint the backside of the grille to prevent rust!

The camshaft, which is also the approximate length of the engine block, comes out without removing the grille. So I'd give it a try, you might have to loosen and wiggle the motor mounts a bit, but worth the attempt.

Why would you have to loosen the engine mounts on a '51-'54 model?????

I think what Dave is getting at is to raise the motor enough to get it to align with the water distribution hole with the spacing in the grille so it can be removed without interference.

I wouldn't take the chance on bending it to try to cheat, just pull the grille.

Why pull the grille if you don't have to? That was the point Eric, try it and see if it clears. If it doesn't, pull the grille.

The risk of cracking that huge die cast grille is surely greater than the risk of just seeing if the tube clears.
