I stand corrected. In the illustration I thought the electrical section looked like it was a bit taller and narrower than the Autolite.

Yes, gear reduction with overrunning clutch (no Bendix).

Did Packard offer/produce any reduction gear starters for the streight 8's ??? I'm guessing not. On the other hand i wonder if the ZIS reduction gear starter would be a direct bolt on to the Packard. Those living in extremely cold climates with Packards mite consider that for their "slow turning" 6 volt starters.

How common was block heaters on the Zis/Zil Chaikas???? Either injections????

Yes. The photos of the starter in posts 1 and 5 are of the Auto-Lite starter for the Packard 356 (1940-1950). It appears that the Soviet-copied starter and the original Auto-Lite starter are practically identical.

Yes, as far as I see there can be no talk of an inspired starter design. It seems to be a 1:1 copy.
