Kevin (BigKev), the below shown methods come too late for your car but will probably help others to derust a tank. The seasonal application is a distinguishing feature that connects motorcycles, vintage cars and agricultural machinery. And the consequences are always the same - rust, rust, rust. Here are three creative ways to mechanically derust the tanks with a handful pebble gravel and a quarter gallon diesel in preparation for the chemical working steps.

--> Studebaker Champion

--> tractor

--> Kreidler (motorcycle)

Youtube offers a lot of other imaginative versions, for example by help of engine lathes and even ... wheelchairs.

This is genius! Especially using the Cement Mixer. I am going to try that on a Ford gas tank I need cleaned out.

Thanks Guscha!

Hot sulphuric acid is another way. It can be neutralized using baking soda. However, once metal rusts the surface area is increased exponentially and new rust will form that much faster. So a chromate dip or other coating is required to forestall further corrosion.

Guscha, How very inventive and original. I'm one that tends to over think things and get lost in the problem. This is a perfect example of the "KISS" (keep it simple stupid) approach that I so often overlook. Thanks for posting.
