my sedan has one,is it a original option ??

It was an option. Not sure when it became available postwar but here is photo from a 54 accessory catalog of the version Packard sold. There were also aftermarket companies which had them but with slightly different looks.

I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I can't begin to image how awkward a continental kit must look on a 4-door sedan. But to each his own.

Yes, continental kits were an option in 1953. I will scan and post some pics from the brochure later.
As Owen said, it's a matter of taste.
