I was just browsing the "Serviceman's Training Book" for the 24th Series Packards, published in August 1950 and see that it identifies the engines as "Thunderbolt". So my guesstimate that the timing of the trademark was about 1953 is obviously incorrect.

Bob, why don't you just browse the 48-54 parts manual available on this website. There are about 32 different cylinder heads listed, a few too many for me to type out. For 1954 the standard heads (excluding export and specials) were 7.7 for the 288, 8.1 for the 327, and 8.7 for the 359.

my 52 has a 288 Thunderbolt AT engine. the head says such. by the way i am looking for a 327 Thunderbolt AT "K" engine for my 52 200 Deluxe to put the right motor that came with the car. with 12 " plate UltraDramatic trans..
if you or anybody hear of anything let me know. i say one for say a while back but i was not buying then. thanks

Never trust the marking on the head as to what the bottom end is. The heads are interchange. For example my '54 Motor has a '51 288 AT on it.

The number on the side of the actual block will tell you what the motor really is. The head may have just been replaced on it.

And to take Kev's post further, there is a factory bulletin authorizing and elaborating on which head to use on which engine to change compression ratios from stock. The 288/327 AT/ S or MT cast on head is meaningless to determine size.

Wouldn't the correct engine for a 1952 200 Deluxe be a 288 cid with a K2xxxxx serial number?

To echo Kev & Howard, cyl heads are plentiful and were often replaced (especially on the 1954 359 cid). I believe the 51 & 52 288 engines were pretty much the same...other than the J or K stamp on the block.
