The pump is the adjustment. There are slots on the bracket where pump can rotate and move outward. There was a tool for the job but careful use of a prying object will work. Just don't get it too tight.

Very interesting.
I recently bought the power steering system from a '53 to convert my '51. If you buy the car, I'd be very interested in any further thoughts and observations.

The one I'm looking at is a 51 conv. also. The hydraulics & top worked good but slow the last few times I tried them and have been rebuilt. But the hydraulic cannister is leaking some and today the top wouldn't go down. How do you refill or top off the hydraulic fluid for the top? And what kind of fluid should I use?

Use regular brake fluid if stock. Verify that is what is in the system. Some publications a few years back were recommending a switch to auto trans fluid to save the paint on bottom of doors when cylinders leaked. Unknown how many ever followed that suggestion or if it really worked well. The pump clearances are critical. A worn pump or stuck relief valve can also cause the slow or no operating symptom.

owner says it has brake fluid in it now but not sure what kind--does it matter what we add to it?

I would imagine regular DOT 3 or maybe DOT 4 fluid is what is in there. Any ordinary brake fluid (except the DOT 5 Silicone) should be fine as a refill.

I haven't even looked--what is holding the bottom of the cannister on?

A spring clip which rests in a slight depression on bottom of canister. Be aware this clip can sometimes be stiff when releasing. Use caution not to jar the canister and slosh the brake fluid out.
