Need to know what year. Starting in 1940, many of the six cylinder cars had a smaller/different rear axle/diff. I said many, as with Packard there are exceptions...

38-39's had the same basic rear ends. Ratios are different between years and models and 75 years of service history. Best to check rear ratio before guessing, but of course the 6 cylinder cars are likely to be more efficient. Need to know ratios and if overdrive equipped...

G'day all, As far as I know from stripping them out, 38/39 Six were 4.54 and 38/39 Eight were 4.36. I fitted a 39 Eight 4.36 ratio to my 38 Six ( plus R6 o/d) with the 38 Six axles ( because I had already fitted new axle bearings to the Six axles). PT

Thanks all, I'm slowly convincing myself to purchase a Six (and add taller rear end and OD).
It also helps that no 120 are one the market in Australia at the moment.

Also note that there is a significant difference between the 38 floor shift transmission, when overdrive was not an option, and OD is not a straightforward retrofit, and the 39 column shift, where the addition of an overdrive is quite straightforward. Suggest you consult with Peter Toet, PACA Technical Officer, or others within PACA who may know of cars available that may not be advertised. I seem to recall a 39 conv.coupe might be available...just depends on what you are looking for. There was a RHD 40-110 available stateside recently, otherwise you will be limited to Australia cars, or a LHD import.

Fuel consumption is almost entirely dependant on the right foot pressure. At a GPS 65 mph (110kph) I normally average around 16-18 MPG per Imperial gallon (160 fluid ounces compared to 128 fluid ounces for a US Gallon). The Six and Eight are very similar in mass and Drag Co-efficient ( 1.9-2.1 compared to a modern car of around 0.4) There should be very little difference in fuel consumption. There is a 41- 120 with OD on OZ ebay at the moment. It is $A30k asking price with a spare car. I am not sure how negotiable the price is. There was also very recently a 39 Six with OD on the NSW South Coast for $A18k. They are around. PT
