That's a lot of work when it only takes two minutes to cut the line and install an inline filter before the pump.

I used the Purolator filter F21124. FIRST, chuck the INlet shank into a drill press and using a SHARP knife or other suitable tool cut the OUTlet shank off of the filter even with the flat top of the filter. That will leave about a 3/16 hole which is equivelent to the holes thru the Packard factory fittings. Now cut the body of the filter about 1/2 the distance from the flat bottom of the INlet side and the flat top.
This is the tricky part: That plastic is TOUGH!!!! Cut two or three curved reliefs similar too those evident in the pics i posted if u look closely.
Mine did not come out as planned because i got in a hurry cutting the curved reliefs.
The idea here is to use the plastic body as a spring load to hold the filter element up against the Packard potmetal housing. The 'feet' that are formed by the curved reliefs will wedge against the curved bottom of the sediment bowl and act as a spring.
Look close, u will see that my filter is slightly off to the rear. Not a problem, just a sign of haste on my part in cutting the reliefs. Use three reliefs insteasd of two.

AFTER i started cutting the filter i suddenly realized a better way. I believe that a LARGER DIAMETER, BUT LIGHT PRESSURE SPRING that will just fit over the OD of the plastic body and against the plastic top lip will do the trick. No need for curved cut reliefs nor spacers.

I have run the filter back at the tank. After i was satisfied the tank is clean i removed the filter at the tank.
The problem with running a filter anywhere before the pump is that it increases resistence on the draught side. I've never had vapour lock problems but increasing resistence on the draught side of the pump could contribute to vapour lock.

I've had my inline filter on my car in Kansas heat for over two years, driving on a daily basis and never have had vapor lock. I just don't like to do things the hard way!
