While visiting relatives in Cambria CA, one of my friends there asked me about purchasing a late 30's Packard, preferably a coupe, for a daily driver. He is a good mechanic, and has several nice old cars. What he is looking for is a driver, one he can jump in and drive to San Luis Obispo (about 35 miles away) without being worried about breaking down. I suggested a 120, 39-41, with overdrive. I frankly think a 51-54 or a 55-56 would be a better road car, but he likes the style of the 30's cars. Any suggestions from anyone?

I agree a 120 coupe or even a 110 from the late 30's with an overdrive would be a hard car to beat for reliability, simplicity and availability of parts. I wish I could find one myself!

FWIW...mine is a 56. Automatic, full power, plenty of oomph for the road.

When I got this car I had the brakes done by a professional Packard expert. My car stops on a dime, every time.
