leaky steering box 47

I've got a pretty good leak at the lower front of the steering box. After studying the parts book and manual, I am wondering what part(s) function to seal the box at the worm cover (15.316)? Seems like it would be sealed by the bearing (15.3316) and the grease retainer (15.3162). Am I right about this?

Gasket 15.317 seals the worm cover.

The cover has a tube attached that extends above the oil level in the steering box and serves as a conduit for the horn wire. The tube is swaged into the cover and can sometimes leak if it has become a bit loose.

Since 15.317 is a set of shims, I wondered whether they would also serve as gaskets.
Can I remove the cover and tube without removing the entire box?

I'm not sure and don't have a vehicle handy to check.

From memory, the tube attached to the cover is about 8" long so removal would be possible as long as there is nothing else in the way.

Yes you can remove the end without removing the box, you just have to disconnect the horn wire that runs through the tube.

Nope, can't remove the end, because the frame is in the way.
For now, I am going to put it back together and hope the leak was caused by the cover screws loosening up.
SM calls for a thread sealant on the screws. What would be a good product for that?
