"I found that photo of Stephen's trunk lid interesting because it has a combination of both the sprayed material and the asphaltic matt. That's a Derham, Stephen, is it not? Since the car is black you can't say anything about whether those two materials were painted or left in their natural black."
Yes it is a 1953 Derham. Formal Sedan. I am sure I will be able say something in regards to black paint v. the possibility of a natural black of the deadening materials, I offered to go over to the car this weekend for a close visual inspection and can possibly make some new images if wanted. I have enlarged and cropped the area you mentioned from one of the posted images. Pretty obvious the mat material hasn't been painted and it doesn't look like the tar-like material has been either.
I enlarged the other image and unfortunately I can't get enough visual information to bother enlarging and cropping something that we can't use one way or the other at this point.
Also, I would be more than happy to take any requests for reference photographs for anyone who needs info on "correct" way to do their Senior restoration. My car is a thirty year time capsule.
