Having trouble pulling the water pump on my '48 super 8.One of the bottom bolts is rubbing on and is below the level of the motor mount?flange.Any suggestions?

Just about everyone who has ever changed a water pump on this era Packard has run into that. Your front motor mount rubber has deteriorated, allowing the front of the motor to sag down. You'll find lots of posts on this if you search, but in a nutshell there are a couple of ways to go about it.Sometimes if you place a jack with a piece of flat wood under the front of the oil pan and apply a little pressure, the motor will rise enough to get the lower bolts off. But if your motor mount is that deteriorated the two rubber pieces should be replaced so I'd plan on doing it at the same time. Leave the jack in place with some force on it, remove the two bolts holding the motor mount plate to the engine, and then loosen or remove the bolts at the base of the "U"-shaped yoke. This will allow you to both remove and reinstall the pump and also replace the front mount rubber.

Owen, if I might add, as long as browntrout has all of this removed, to remove the Timing Cover and check the Timing Chain and front oil seal.

Wesley, of course you can add! I'd say, sure, why not, though I don't know how easy it might be to remove the vibration damper with the radiator in place. I did my timing chain and seal while the radiator was already out. As they say, as long as you've gone this far, ......
