I don't think the oil matters much.

I use good ole SAE-30 same as in the motor.

The principal is:
that air containing dirt particles enters the filter, as the air flow has to make an abrupt 180 degree change in direction and the entrained dirt being heavier can't make the direction change, it ends up trapped in the oil.

Do not fill above the fill line, you don't want the element resting in the oil or it obstructs air flow to the engine.

I washed out the filter mesh in gasoline and let it dry. Some tiny amount of oil ends up on the mesh.

All the NAPA stores around here stock SAE-50 motor oil in their own house brand as about the same price as other oils; I use it in my oil bath air filters and also in the crankcase breather cap mesh, cleaning and reoiling of which is often neglected. For pre-1937 Seniors it's also the best substitute for the original Bijur oil.

Now days, instead of gas I prefer using odorless paint thinner for cleaning. As I tend to come away from the situation with a little smell. It is also a little safer than gas.

Oil filler breather cap mesh? Can someone suggest a current or modern product to replace that material? (Sorry to have veered if course a bit). Thankyou.

I used a copper "Chore Boy" scrubber in mine. Actually I think it was 3. Just use the tip of a flat blade screwdriver to poke it through the holes in the cap, and don't forget to oil it as well.

You can also buy the correct OEM-style copper mesh from Classic & Exotic; it comes is sheet form which is perfect for air filters but you're still left with how to get it inside the breather cap if you're not willing to open the cap at seam and pack as it originally was.
