Carburetor overflow problem 1601 Stromberg EE-16

Dear All,

We just got back from Salado yesterday. What a great meet. Big Kev, Flackmaster, JW, and many other PInfo folks were there. The weather was great, the cars were great, and a good time was had by all.

Veronica (Laurie's 1601 Club Coupe) made the trip to and back (about 115 miles) without a hitch. Today I took the car from my drive to Laurie's place (where it lives), a distance of perhaps a 1/4 mile, though with a few steep grades between. Car started great and drove great. After cresting the top of her steep driveway, the car died.

Upon trying to restart, a strong smell of fuel became apparent and it acted like it was flooded. Investigation shows that when the engine is turned over, fuel begins spurting out of the accelerator pump shaft hole on the top of the carb float cover. Fuel also begins pouring down the throat of the carb.

My thinking is that the float is sticking or the needle is screwed up. Any other thoughts.

I think you've identified the most likely suspects. Sometimes with a stuck float a good rap on the side of the float bowl with a plastic screwdriver handle or equivalent saves the day.

Fuel pump is a rebuilt (about 2 years ago) original mechanical pump.

We have pulled the carb. I'll update this thread when we figure it out.

We have decided to send the carb to Daytona Parts for restoration. Cost is $250.

The only problem with that is - when you get the carb back you won't know whether to put it on the car or on the mantle

Tom, why not buy the kit from Datona, and overhaul it yourself? It is not a complicated carburetor and I am sure with all the resources available you could do a first class job. In addition, there would be the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Just a suggestion...

Normally that is exactly what I would do. I have already torn into this carb 4 times. There are some threaded holes that are partially stripped, the top isn't quite flat, etc., so having Daytona go through it seems like a good idea.

I agree, good decision. Let someone with more resources repair the carburetor and fix those things beyond what we individuals can do.

Could you post what Daytona tells you the issue was once you learn? I'd be interested in the root cause.

My bet is a carb float that no longer floats, flooding everything.
