I have tried a myriad of different materials to assist the rather feeble clip on my door handle. They ranged from the commonplace -- folded paper or cardboard -- to the universal fix-all -- duct tape -- to pieces of rubber, caulking, plastic ... anything that I thought might secure the handle to the door. Like your experience, these work OK for a while; but then they fall out, compress too much, or simply cease to perform their job. That is why I started this thread in the first place; I though someone would have a better idea.

In answer to your question about the door handle tool, I have only seen them in photos and never in person, so I do not haved a clue where you might acquire one.

you might try slotting it first and use a horse shoe clip,

seems to me Studebaker used that type

I forget who said, to deepen groove ,, but do that too,,

I will definitely try that this evening after I pick up the car.

That was a standard door handle tool in the 60, 70's and 80's for your window cranks. Check the auto parts stores. I think that they still have them.

Try Amazon.com I bought two such examples with the last year.

I think harbor freight sells something like that.
