Jim,
Like the picture, looks very original. I also heard back from DavidM who is currently away with his '12 Maxwell at the RACV VETERAN CAR CLUB NATIONAL TOUR in Shepparton about 750kms south, but he'll respond on his return.

Thanks, Does anyone know where I should look for the "Serial" Number stamping, if there is one?

Tim, There are 2 numbers listed on an old Registration paper. I'm just trying to confirm that second number. Do you know where to look for those other number locations you mentioned? Also, where to obtain a repro number plate? Thanks, Jim

Jim,
That's a great looking survivor, I have a soft spot of the First Series Single Sixes having owned one since the mid 1970's. I believe you have correctly identified yours. As you are probably already aware, the First Series Single Six was produced from April 1922 to December 1923 and the engine numbers ran from 9000 to 35942. These cars were identified by series number rather than year. With an engine number around 19,000 yours could have been made in 1922 or 1923. The brass body plate is located on the inside of the fire wall on the LHS behind the dash. There is also a chassis number stamped on the top of the LH chassis rail just in front of the firewall. The engine, chassis and identification plate numbers are usually within a few hundred from each These cars do not have any particular vices and must have been fine cars in the early 1920's. The brakes, despite being externally contracting on the rear wheels only work fine under all conditions except heavy rain.

Hi Jim:
Here are a couple of pictures I found on the web. I used to have access to an actual car but have since moved. I don't know if this style of VIN plate is available, but there are plates showing up on ebay. As can be seen from the picture, the published authorities aren't always reliable. That's the wonderful world of Packard. Now you know where the motor number is, and the chassis number as well. There should be a number of the right front of the front axle, and on the left rear of the transmission. But maybe those are moving around too. There is always the possibility of a motor change as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks to DavidM and Tim we now know more. The Body Number is 225-2358 and the Chassis Number is U19028. Perhaps that U19131A number that appears on the 1956 New York State registration as a "Serial Number" is the number that was on the now missing firewall plate? I'll watch for the front axle and transmission numbers as well....
