22-23 series heater

Does anyone have photos or know how the core fits and air flow is routed inside the 22-23 series heater box. There is a poster on PAC forum who has cold air blowing into his 49 via heater ducting yet has good hot water flow thru core. He is looking for info on how this could be.

I know the 51 thru maybe 54 has the core lay flat over a plenum affair directly under the center of core. That plenum is part of the exit into car. Air comes in from the bottom and plenum covering the center of core forces air to go up thru core on the outer sides to area at top of box. It then does a 180 and flows back thru the center of core and into the plenum and outlet. Is the 22-23 done the same way? I'm thinking if the core is cocked or plenum has come loose the air could bypass the core and flow directly into car.

Any photos or first hand descriptions or suggestions would be most helpful to the gentleman. Also, does the box come apart the same as later -- held with sheet metal screws and one or two inaccessible on the firewall side?

Howard,

I don't know how helpful this may be but there were changes made between the 22nd and 23rd series fresh-air heater systems. With the 22nd series, to operate the heater, both the left and right air knobs are turned off (full right position). The 23rd series requires that the right air knob be turned fully open (full left position) past the index mark used to direct air to the ventilation grill.

The two (48 & 49) owners manuals on the site describe this better than I do.

Thanks. I saw the change in flapper operation but not sure that is the posters problem. He says the cold air is coming from heater ducts and not the vent so will assume he knows the difference and that's what is happening.

I'd never given much thought to airflow inside the box on early units. Question is as much for my education as his. I know the 51 thru maybe 53 or maybe even 54 was as described. 55-6 was different in that the core was angled and air flow was one pass thru full core. Just never paid much attention to the 22-23's.

Here are some photos of a 22nd Series heater box.
Air flows up from the blower and into an internal plenum which directs the flow through the center of the core. There is a close fitting cover on the core that forces the air to turn 180 degrees and into the ducting inside the car. The internal cover is held in place by 4 rubber cushions that the outer cover presses against. There is very little room inside the heater box for the core to get tilted, but perhaps the flow could bypass the core if the inner cover was missing.

As far as screws on the outer cover, there are 7 of them, 2 of which are on the bottom side and hard to get to with the blower assembly in place.

More information than was asked for, but here are details of the air distribution inside the car that is controlled by the defrost knob.

For heat, the large flapper and the smaller one on the bottom are open and warm air is directed down onto the passengers feet and into the plenum that goes across the bottom of the firewall.

For defrost, the heat flappers close and the 2 round flappers in the defrost vent connections are opened.

BDeB, I appreciate all the effort to post the great photos. Heater is actually a little different than was expected so I learned something new today. As to the second batch on the airflow distribution assy, more information is good and will never be refused so thanks again.

Posted a link to the thread for the gentleman at PAC so hopefully he will come over and get the information he asked for first hand.

I saw a diagram of the air flow/how the controls work recently looking for something else, but don't remember precisely where at the moment. If come across again I'll post. I haven't got that far w/ mine.

Maybe it was this? From the 22nd series [1948] accessory brochure.
