1948 Deluxe Questions

1948 Deluxe 2262 - (1) If I need to remove the carburetor, how does the vacuum line from the carb attach to the manifold ? I am afraid it may break. (2) Where do I get Tool J2502 to remove the windshield wiper control knob from the inside dash? Thanks

If you mean the 1/4 inch tube between manifold and black choke housing, the manifold end is just a slip fit inside another slightly larger tube which goes thru the manifold and is fastened in position. The portion to carb just slides out.

Hi John:

A tip for the choke heater tube: Spray it with "rust buster" (aka penetrating oil) because it might be stuck, and apply anti-seize when installing so it will not get stuck.

For the wiper switch nut (J2502): I made one for myself out of a piece of steel. It's a must have otherwise the nut will be damaged. Packard loved that part and used it in a number of applications.

Thanks to both HH and Tim - HH , I mistaking called it a vacuum line - it is a choke heater tube. About the wiper switch nut wrench, I have a similar one that's too small Thanks

Hi Dave:

I made a tool to remove the special nut. I'm sure I have it around here somewhere.

One way to make one is to buy a cheap metal gasket scraper, heat the blade until cherry red then bring the temperature down slowly, bend the end over in a vise, then grind to fit the special nut.

Isn't the nut similar to those used to retain the high tension wires in the NorthEast distributor caps? If so, a tool like the Standard Ignition nut-driver should do it. Easily made if you don't have one, a piece of round stock, drill a hole, and a some grinding to make the tangs.

And here is what the official tool looked like. Haven't seen readily available flat steel in that thickness range but maybe some brass flat stock bent over????
