I was thinking about going to the gooding auction last weekend to bid on this 1936 packard. Unforeseen circumstances kept me home; I'm glad it did cause I wasn't ready to pay $170k. I was hoping to get it more towards the bottom end of the estimate.

Then you need to add local, state or provincial taxes when registering yor vehicle.
In Ontario that adds another 13% to the price. Bob

Private sales are generally the better bet; for one thing you usually have far more time to examine the car, talk with owner, and test-drive. Also it may be a less competitive situation in terms of the number of interested buyers. Aside from this I'd think a major factor in the price differences is condition and provenance. Especially the case with Caribbeans over other body styles, the adherence to correctness of restoration details is very important.
Lovely car, those 53 Caribbeans - best of luck with it and hope it gives you many enjoyable miles.

prices on 53 Caribbeans selling are quite varying right now because they are so varying on condition, true Number 1 conditions cars sell so rarely because there is under 5 of these existing, most of the cars that you see lately through these auctions are solid number 3's. I think the Gulf Green car that sold in the 90's recently in the last few weeks was a strong #2 car and a darn good buy, You really have to look for bondo, vinyl interiors, wrong color combinations, and true restoration quality on these cars. They are very complex and most places do not know what is original and what is not ..... the cost to go from a number 3 to a number 2, and a number 2 to a number 1 is sometimes substantial
