The cost of a covered carrier compared to an open one may not be that much more.
I say this because the car will be protected, probably insured, and delivered on time. Think of it as a short term insurance policy premium. Of course if you are transporting a "project" then an open carrier may be the way to go. You need to amortize the cost difference over the time you expect to own the car. My bet is the extra cost will be unnoticed. It all depends upon how much you can afford now. You may be able to find something as good or better closer to home for the price of the car plus shipping. Things to consider... (o{}o)

Thanks JW,
I have already committed to the car. It is a project and I do not have a lot of funds to spend on shipping. Brokers have quoted from $450-$950 dollars. I have heard with the lowball offers, the car never gets picked up (because a transporter would not agree to do it so low) and you get locked with the broker as they hold your deposit. Who are the big players in the car shipping industry? I tried googling "national car shippers" and get a bunch of companies, many who are brokers.

Friend of mine used uship.com.
Enter what you have to ship along with the to and from info and get bids from hualers that are willing. There are lots of flatbed haulers that deliver cars all over the country and they should be insured. My friend had a car picked up in Northern Montana and had it delived to Central Illinois in about a week. The hualer even provided him with GPS tracking data so he could track the truck as it was on the road. Cost him about $800 total.

I tried USHIP and was bombarded with calls and emails. Very overwhelming. Does your friend remember the actual shipping company they used?

Lucky for you he is sitting in an office down the hall.
He does not remember the name but it was just a guy that owned a flat bed. Not a big company. He did say he checked a box saying that he did not want to be contacted until an offer had been made. That hid his email and phone number from average users. Check your account settings and maybe cut down on all the spam.

I used uship back in 2007 when I bought my Coupe. Needed to get it from Idaho to Los Angeles so it could then be shipped to Australia. Post #1 in my old Project Blog Mal's '41 120 Coupe refers.
