i have been trying to get my new 1003 running after 35 years of storage. i need to remove the cane shifter to remove the floor boards, is there a trick? thanks for your help. dell

Gee, that looks a bit different than my 34 and I would have thought they'd be identical, especially as the transmission is identical and the bodies are nearly identical. The cane is retained in the socket by a large conical spring from below. So you don't remove the cane from the transmission, you remove the entire cane assembly. It's been 40 years or more since I looked at mine but as I recall access to the cane assembly retaining screws (6 of them, one showing in your photo) was simple and fast - perhaps you're missing something simple about removing the black metal section of floor panel around the cane?
