LJJ's 1947 2126 7 Passenger Sedan

Given the amount of work that I am doing on my 2126, I might as well introduce it to the Packarfinfo community.

The story so far:

I purchased my 2126 via eBay / consignment dealer with an accepted best offer late in 2012. The Packard was purchased from the widow of the previous owner who had owned it since 1957! I am the third owner. This is a CA black plate car, Earl C Anthony delivery etc. It still remains in remarkable original condition.

Once I got the Packard to Australia (which by the way is not a hard process) I have completed the following:

Front suspension rebuild.
Fix up the poor brake rebuild, which required relining the shoes and machining the drums.
Rear suspension shocks and bushes.
Repair a very minor rust spot on the rear LHS sill.
Installed a new front YnZ wiring harness (as an insurance policy).
New engine mounts.
New water pump.
Oil changes.

I recently drove the Packard 700 kms without any issues, not bad I reckon, given I am yet to replace spark plus and ignitions items.

Currently I am sorting out the overdrive (which was not operational as advised by the dealer......).

I consider this Packard as an excellent buy and I intend to maintain it as required rather than "restore" it. It's survived this long OK.

I am very impressed at how this car drives. The brakes are excellent, steers very nicely. Being built on the commercial car chassis, some of the components have been a bit trickier to locate, but it has all been possible via good parts dealer assitance and help though Packardinfo.

Next job is to rebuild the mechanical fuel pump, any advice before I leap into it?

Glove box liners, I see Max has them and you can get them on eBay. Any recommendations as they do seem dear for a bit of cardboard.

You can make your own from the painted card stock used for package shelves if you have enough left for a pattern. any reinforcment, tape, etc applied on the outside won't show when installed

I agree. I've used thick door panel type or package shelf cardboard on some but this last one I made for the 47 was done using black mat board from the photo framing shop. A piece large enough was around $10 and was closer in thickness to the original than the heavy material I had been using.

Used the old as a pattern to lay out the lines. Marked the folds and used steam to soften the cardboard along the fold lines before bending.. That kept the wrinkles and any cracking of the cardboard to a minimum. Used the heavy hand stapler where I could and finished with hot glue on places the stapler wouldn't reach. Also used the glue to hold the speednuts for the mounting screws.

My liner was originally flocked on the inside so went ahead and did that part for a finishing touch... Just wish I could have found a good sample of the old flock to match. The color I chose turned out just a tad darker than I would have liked.

All told the entire project took about 3 hours - not counting the flock dry time - and with exception of the flock material, was considerably cheaper than the premade item. The flock material was also used in the trunk so I bought enough for both and not really considering that as too much of the liner cost. If you decide to flock and have to buy material only for the liner then you will be in the range of the premade liners.
