Hello Tolandis:
The "gold" color comes when the zinc body casting (Zamak alloy) is di-chromate plated. After use and especially exposed to high heat under the hood the gold color will fade. Before you worry about the color you should worry if you have the "right" AAV-26 carb. I found out the hard way. Saw a carb at a swap meet and the iron carb base had AAV-26 cast into it. I thought I was good to go. WRONG. What I failed to understand is that not all AAV-26's are created equal. I needed to look on the top of the throat body section for the number code - see the photo below. Mine was 6-97B - I later learned it was meant to fit a 1941-42 Studebaker President. It is NOT meant for a Packard. For 1941 and 1942 Packards the code you need to see is 10-44 For your 1940 Packard you need to see code 10-40 Either code may end in an alpha character, but that is irrelevant. If you have your carb rebuilt at Daytona Carb they will re-plated you carb with di-chromate.

Thanks for the info.
The one on the car is a 10-40. And the one I just got is a 10-44 so I guess good to go. Will send to Daytona.

IIRC, the 10-40 was only for the 1940 and the 10-44 was only for the 1941s and 1942s.
That 10-44 MAY or MAY NOT work for your 1940 motor. But don't rely on my faulty memory. The best way to check is to call Daytona (386) 427-7108 and ask for "Tim." He can confirm what your spare carb will work. If you find out that the 10-44 will NOT work for you, then please contact me via PM as I would like to buy it as a spare. Thanks

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Both carburetors are 10-40. If I run across a 10-44 will let you know.
Thanks Todd

No worries. Glad to see things worked out in your favor.
Meanwhile my AVV-26 for a Studebaker is now listed on eBay. I would still like to find a 10-44 model. Thanks, --Roger--
