So was the engine starting and running just fine and the starter broke so unexpectedly OR was there some failure of the engine to start in some satisfactory manner just prior to the starter breaking??

Question: Were some export Packards equipped with 12-volt systems
Yes, though the ones I'm aware of were Senior cars in the late 1930s. Perhaps a search would help you with this, we've had a discussion on this previously. Here's some excerpts from the parts list for 1938 Seniors which I believe I got from BDC. Note the special 12-volt lighting equipment was for RHD cars - as you probably know up until the advent of sealed beams U.S.-origin headlamps were generally not accepted by most European countries. That's why export cars to Europe often show headlamps by Marchall, Zeiss, and others depending on the country of import.

Try a Massey Ferguson TE20 starter. The starter housing looks the same.

I don't really know but my guess is that any MF or HF in India would be a TEA 20 which used a Standard Motors engine and most likely Lucas starter. However the bendix housing might still be the saame as used on the US TO and TE series with delco and Continental engine.

Oh wait a minute. I see that Africapackard is in Africa. I am surprised that there are any TO or TE models in Africa. I thought that any MF or HF in Africa would be TEA with Standard engine and Lucas electrics.

The engine was running fine. Shut the car and came back after lunch and it made a rattling noise from the starter upon cranking. on a slight increase rev she was smooth and no issues .
Brought her to the workshop and opened to check is when I realised it was in two and being held by the bush and sift regards

Bumping this thread back to life.
I am interested in how Kasli solves the starter problem and hopefully hear more from him about motoring in India and the cars they drive.

Hi kasli - I have sent you a p.m (Private Message) as I have had this same problem in the past. Big Kev or another Ambassador will help you with access to your p.m if in any doubts.
Best regards Michael
